Welcome!

You've reached the public homepage of the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey. The CFHTLS is a joint project of the Canadian and French astronomy communities. Poised to begin in early 2003, the CFHTLS will run for for approximately 450 nights over 5 years. The project will use the Canada France Hawaii Telescope, Canada's premier optical and infrared telescope, and MegaCam, a new camera that's able to take the largest and clearest pictures of any astronomical camera on Earth.

The CFHTLS consists of three components: the UltraWide Survey, the Deep Survey and the UltraDeep Survey. Combined, these three components take the CFHTLS from the solar system to the remote universe and create an ideal set of data for nearly any project that uses large optical images. The data will be available simultaneously and equally to all registered Canadian and French astronomers for any scientific purpose they choose.

With this website, you can discover how the three surveys will teach us about dark energy, dark matter and our own solar system; you can learn about the telescope and the camera the CFHTLS will use; you can see pictures and photos related to the CFHTLS; and you can read about what newspapers and other websites have said about the CFHTLS. Enjoy!
