Hi all,
I would agree with Ray that there was wide support for an extension of
the proprietary period (at least for the start of the survey). And many
sensible arguments were put forward.
The Sloan high-z quasars should be a good lesson. We do not have
"guaranteed" access to large telescopes, and will scoped in some of the
science.
The students were clearly all concerned about being scooped. We have
some idea of how to protect them within our community, but we cannot
offer any protection from the rest of the world. The results will be
made available in such a useful form that it is very easy for others
to get very nice results at the expense of the CFHTLS community.
For sure, I didn't hear any objections from anybody against an
extension of the proprietary period... It is also clear that
the extension is requested as a "protection" of our community, and
not because we want to "sit" on the data.
We (the CFHTLS) community are the first to work with these data, and
we have no idea how the data will be. We definitely will need a
startup time before all the wrinkles are ironed out. I think neither
terapix, nor CADC, nor CFHT can guarantee that they can produce
the definite datasets from the date the survey starts, and over
the year things will improve, and we will have to wait for those
improvements, or invest much time dealing with "not optimal" data.
Then after 13 months everything might be fine, and the CFHTLS
community might actually have access to the same data as the
rest of the world at the same time!
We can always reduce the proprietary time during the survey, but we
cannot ask for an increase during the survey. Given the many uncertainties
right now I think a request for an initial 3 year period is very
sensible.
Cheers,
Henk
