Cafe Scientifique "The Challenges of Bringing Molecular Diagnostics to the Developing World" Dr. Paul Romaniuk, Dept of Biochemistry & Microbiology One of the pressing needs to address concerns about global health care is the development and provision of rapid, inexpensive diagnostics that can be used at the point of care to test for infectious diseases. Timely and accurate diagnosis in low resource settings will have a huge impact on improving the health of many of the poorest people in the world. I will describe the new technologies we are developing at UVic to address this need in the context of the many challenging conditions presented by the locations where the tests will be used.
