Before Tragedy Strikes: The Quest to Predict Megadisasters
Dr. Florin Diacu, Dept of Math and Statistics

Can we predict tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, sudden
climate changes, cosmic impacts, deadly pandemics, and stock market crashes?
In the past it would have been impossible to give a positive answer to this
question. But in the mean time science has made a lot of progress, and we
can now better grasp some of the secrets such catastrophes hide. Still there
is a lot to do to understand them in detail. This talk is about whether we
can foretell extreme events and how individuals could prepare to shield
themselves from megadisasters.
