Hi all,
A few comments about field selection for the extra-galactic components
of the CFHTLS: observing the publicly available SIRTF Legacy fields
would be very beneficial since combining the CFHTLS optical data with
the SIRTF IR data would enable all kinds of interesting science and so
would greatly enhance the value of CFHTLS at no extra cost to the
community.
The current CFHTLS plan calls for CFHTLS data in 1-2 publicly
available SIRTF fields plus one *proprietary* SIRTF field (the Groth
Strip). Given that there have been calls for increasing the number of
fields (and decreasing their sizes) in the wide extragalacitc
component of the CFHTLS, I suggest that the new fields be placed to
overlap as much as possible with the SIRTF legacy fields. The
relevant SIRTF legacy fields are listed below. These fields will be
observed by SIRTF within the first year of the mission (i.e., in 2003)
and will be publicly available with *no* proprietary time.
field RA Dec extinction size
E(B-V) (deg^2)
ELAIS-S1 00h38m30s -44d00m00s 0.008 15
XMM-LSS 02h21m00s -05d00m00s 0.027 10
CHANDRA-S 03h32m00s -28d16m00s 0.001 5
LOCKMAN HOLE 10h45m00s +58d00m00s 0.006 15
LONSDALE HOLE 14h38m00s +59d15m00s 0.012 10
ELAIS-N1 16h13m30s +55d16m00s 0.007 10
ELAIS-N2 16h36m48s +41d01m45s 0.007 5
The current plan envisions observing the XMM field and possibly one of
the northern ELAIS fields, which gives us only limited overlap with
SIRTF. The plan also calls for overlapping with SIRTF observations of
the Groth Strip, but the Groth Strip SIRTF data will be proprietary
(as will be the upcoming extensive Keck spectroscopy of that field).
Thus, currently we do not have nearly as much overlap with public
SIRTF data as we could have.
Given that field sizes and locations appear to be still up in the air,
I suggest that CFHTLS try to overlap with as many as possible of the
SIRTF legacy fields.
Marcin
