Student/job opportunities in the Ellison Group

Machine learning at UVic

Graduate student opening for Fall 2019

There is a graduate student vacancy in the Ellison group for Sept. 2019, at either the MSc or PhD level (where a PhD candidate should have previously completed an MSc or equivalent). A variety of projects are available. However, I am particularly interested in a training a student to work with cosmological simulations, or in machine learning applications in extra-galactic astronomy. The recent establishment of UVic's ARCNet and the expertise of the Ellison group, offer excellent opportunities for students interested in Big Data and machine learning applications in astronomy

Pre-requisites: a BSc in astronomy or physics (or MSc if applying for a PhD). Computer science graduates will be considered for machine learning projects at the MSc level. Strong programming skills are essential. Other pre-requisites (such as minimum GPA, language requirements etc.) can be found on the Dept. of Physics and Astronomy website. Applications should be submitted directly to UVic via their online application system, but interested applicants are encouraged to contact Prof Ellison to express their interest. Applications can be considered until March 31 2019, but application by Jan 15 2019 is strongly encouraged, in order to receive consideration for UVic entrance fellowships.

Postdoctoral opening for Fall 2019

The Ellison group welcomes applications for the CITA National Fellowship, in theory or related fields. Applicants working with cosmological hydrodynamical simulations for the study of galaxy evolution, or applicants with experience in machine learning techniques are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications are made directly to CITA (deadline Nov 10), but interested applicants are encouraged to contact Prof. Ellison in adavnce.

A general postdoctoral position is also available. The successful applicant will be expected to work on topics of interest to the research group and to develop and lead their own projects within this framework. Ideally, the applicant will bring complementary skills to the group, with expertise in either machine learning, galaxy simulations, large surveys/big data or observations of gas in galaxies of particular interest. Full details here. Deadline Dec 3 2018.
