Star talk mailing list

Startalk has an e-mail list. You can send messages to this list as well: startalk at lists dot uvic.ca for any of your stellar needs ;-). Future announcements regarding our regular star talk sessions will go only to this list, which is by the way open to everyone interested. Subscribe at https://lists.uvic.ca/mailman/listinfo/startalk

Fall 2013

This term our star talk sessions will be Mondays 2:30pm in the Chart Room. The first meeting will be Monday, September 9.

Kim and I propose that we try for star talk this term a slightly more focused approach. We would like to dedicate this term mostly on topics related to galactic chemical evolution, especially in the early universe, and in isolated systems such as GCs and dSphs. This would include disussions on structure formation and evolution as well as on stellar nucleosynthesis, especially in the early Universe and for new yield data sets.

We would like to see a slightly more structured format with an assigned discussion leader (just short of a formal presentation, however with a few prepared presenataion notes). The discussions would be either on some important papers (that we have to define and assign in the first session) as well as our own results and research plans.

Please bring your ideas, especially your suggestions for "most important papers" to the first meeting so that we can draft an initial schedule.

Fall 2012

This term Kim is the star talk session chair. Kim's star group page.

Fall 2010

astro-ph sessions

We will have from time to time "prepared astro-ph sessions". For that purpose you would send to me at any time you like suggestions for astro-ph papers that you would like to discuss. About a week or so before the astro-ph session I will post and announce the 3 papers that we are going to discuss. The idea is that everybody has time to read the papers and then we can have a meaningful discussion. This format is new and we try it out. It originated from the desire of students to discuss the virtue and implications of some papers in this audience. Let's see how it goes.
